How A Silicone Implant Rhinoplasty Infection Created A Hole In The Nose After Several Years

Dr. Kwon Treats Patient With Silicone Implant Rhinoplasty Infection

This 28-year-old male patient previously had a rhinoplasty with a silicone implant at another practice. After several years, the patient developed a low grade implant infection in his nose. More horrifyingly, as time went on, the silicone implant began to extrude out of the tip of his nose creating a hole right at the center.

Why Did This Happen?

His nasal implant infection was never completely cleared with antibiotics and eventually thinned out the nose tip skin and pushed through the skin. Pictured below, photograph of the silicone implant removed and before/after shot from the O.R.

What Are The Signs Of A Silicone Implant Rhinoplasty Infection?

It is important to know the signs of an implant infection to prevent it from getting worse. Here are the most common signs:

• Late swelling
• Redness
• Drainage (Puss)
• Smell (Bad odor)

If this patient had sought out consultation earlier, we could have removed the implant before it began to extrude out. (Read the Signs Of An Infection After A Traditional Rhinoplasty). The risk of implant infection always remains as long as the implant is inside your nose. Due to this concern, many patients are preemptively changing out their silicone implants with a DCF graft to minimize the chance of this happening.
